Music Scholarship Application
Music Scholarships Year 11
The School has a commitment to excellence and achievement both in academic and other cultural and sporting pursuits. The awarding of Music Performance Scholarships for Year 11 students is a further expression of that commitment.
A number of Music Performance Scholarships will be awarded for students entering Year 11 in 2024. Each Scholarship will be worth 50% of the tuition fees for the student in both Year 11 and Year 12. Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of an instrument performance, and a student’s past and present general performance at school.
Continuation of the Scholarship from one year to the next will be dependent upon a Scholarship student’s continuing satisfactory performance and conduct, and contribution to Music in the School. Music Performance Scholarship students will be required to participate fully in the School Music programme including instrumental lessons, bands, ensembles and performances.
The total audition time will be approximately 20 minutes.
The audition will be conducted with the following structure:
- A performance by the candidate of prepared pieces and technical work. (10 minutes)
- A series of short aural/perception tests undertaken by the candidate. (5 minutes)
- An interview with the candidate – to gather background information and assess levels of music theory knowledge. (5 minutes)
- The total playing time for all pieces and technical work (scales etc.) will be no more than 10 minutes, even if more than one instrument is played by the candidate. Candidates are encouraged to play two prepared pieces of a contrasting nature; however, this is not a requirement of the audition process.
- Candidates who wish to audition on more than one instrument will be required to play a minimum of one piece on each instrument; whilst not exceeding the 10 minutes available for this section of the audition.
- The interviewer will make selections from a written list of prepared pieces and technical work (scales etc.) that must be provided by the candidate and presented to the interviewer at the start of the audition.
- Candidates may be asked to stop playing at any time during the audition.
- Prepared pieces may be accompanied by a recording. A speaker with blue tooth and/or auxiliary cable will be provided.
- An accompanist is not provided. Live accompaniment is not permitted.
Requirements for the Audition
- A Grand Piano and a Drum Kit will be provided for the Audition. All other instruments must be brought by the candidate to the Audition.
- A room will be available to candidates for 15 minutes prior to the Audition.
- If possible, instruments should be ‘tuned’ before the Audition; however, the interviewer will assist with tuning as required.
