From the Executive
Deputy Principal - Shane Parnell (Issue 09, 2026)
Deputy Principal Shane Parnell farewells the Year 12 Students.
Dear Parents and Carers,
Whether you follow AFL or not, there are some powerful lessons we can all draw from the Grand Final clash between the mighty Fremantle Dockers and the Brisbane Lions. Both teams have spent the entire year training and preparing for the opportunity to claim the sport’s ultimate prize.
For many of the players, football has been a lifelong journey. They likely started playing at a young age and have been supported and encouraged by parents who drove them to training sessions, games and countless other commitments. Along the way, they would have had coaches who taught them skills and strategies, developed their discipline and work ethic, and provided guidance and mentorship. They have shared this journey with teammates who became friends, with whom they celebrated successes, worked through disagreements, and ultimately developed mutual respect and appreciation.
Like all significant journeys, there would have been both highs and lows. There would have been injuries, disappointments and setbacks, but also moments of great joy, achievement and success. As they approach Saturday’s game, I am sure many players are feeling nervous about the future and the outcome that awaits them.
Another group looking towards the end of this week with a mixture of excitement and uncertainty is our Year 12 students. Like the Fremantle and Brisbane players, they too have been on a journey, one that began many years ago. Along the way, they have been supported by their parents, families, teachers and one another. Over the past thirteen years of schooling, they will have experienced moments of joy, success and celebration, as well as periods of challenge, disappointment and stress.
For many of our Year 12 students, the future brings understandable uncertainty. Some may be feeling nervous about upcoming examinations, while others may be preparing to begin an apprenticeship, commence tertiary studies, or enter the workforce. Many will be stepping into a new phase of life and wondering what lies ahead.
School provides students with far more than knowledge and skills. It offers structure, routine and a sense of belonging. It becomes a constant presence in their lives and an important part of who they are. While students may not always express a love of coming to school each day, it is often not until that routine comes to an end that they fully appreciate the important role school has played in shaping their lives.
As our Year 12 students approach the conclusion of their school journey, we are reminded that, like the AFL players preparing for the Grand Final, success is not defined solely by the result at the end. Rather, it is a reflection of the commitment, perseverance, growth and relationships developed throughout the journey itself.
I wish our Year 12 students every blessing as they complete their final weeks of schooling. Whatever path lies ahead, we hope they move forward with confidence,
gratitude and the knowledge that they will always remain an important part of the Frederick Irwin Anglican School community.
And Go the Mighty Dockers!!!!!
God Bless
Mr Shane Parnell

School Chaplain (Issue 09, 2026)
Assistant Chaplain, Alicia Tearle talks about the Anglicare Ambassadors as well as her exciting new role next year.
Dear Parents and Carers
As the Assistant Chaplain I have the privilege of leading the Anglicare Ambassadors and we have had such a productive term with fundraising and promoting awareness of youth homelessness.
The Anglicare Ambassadors are a group of students from Years 10 to 12 who have worked hard on three different fundraisers this term. The first was promoting the Comfy Clothes Day event, across all three campuses. They then organised a raffle, providing the items in the raffle hamper themselves, and selling tickets at lunchtimes outside of the library. The Anglicare Ambassadors also did individual fundraising, asking friends and family to donate towards the Anglicare Sleep Out which they participated in earlier this term. The final amount raised from these events for the Anglicare Street Connect Bus was $5,860!
The most recent fundraiser they helped with was the sausage sizzle on House Day. The money raised from this event will be going towards buying items for the Anglicare Back Pack appeal plus supporting our Compassion Sponsor child from Rwanda, Drocelle. The amount raised was close to $3,000! In Term 4 the Anglicare Ambassadors will be packing the purchased items into backpacks which will be given to families in need through Anglicare, to ensure they have school supplies at the start of the school year.
Coming alongside these students for these causes is such a joy. To see their passion for others, great ideas and their willingness to give up their time to help others, highlights the wonderful students that are part of our school community. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the FIAS community for supporting all of these wonderful Anglicare Ambassador fundraisers, as we couldn’t do this without your support.
The end of the school year seems to be fast approaching and is bringing change in the chaplaincy department. Reverend James Tabor will be retiring from his role as Chaplain for Frederick Irwin at the end of Term 4 and he will be greatly missed. We are currently advertising for an ordained priest to fill the role of Chaplain and I will be stepping up into the role of Lay Chaplain beginning in 2027. It is an honour to be responsible for the Anglican Identity and pastoral care of the students and staff at FIAS, and I look forward to growing in this role next year.

On Tuesday, August 18, three of our Year 10 students represented Frederick Irwin at the Rotary 4-Way Test Speech Contest, competing against students from Coodanup College at the Mandurah Country Club
The purpose of this contest is to introduce Year 10 students to ethical decision-making through public speaking. Students analyse contemporary issues through the lens of the Rotary 4-Way Test of the things we think, say, or do:
- Is it the TRUTH?
- Is it FAIR to all concerned?
- Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
- Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
Stephanie Hunt, Joshua Henrickson and Hadassah Cheri each delivered a highly engaging speech about their chosen topics - the creative arts, aviation & climate change, and the value of time, respectively.
All three students spoke with confidence and enthusiasm, demonstrating very impressive public-speaking skills and presenting their ideas thoughtfully and persuasively. They should be very proud of the way they represented themselves and the School.
A special congratulations goes to Hadassah Cheri, who was awarded second place and received a $200 prize for her excellent speech. She will represent the School once again at the semi-final on September 1.
