The next SchoolTV topic is now available –– Nicotine Addiction
With World No Tobacco Day recognised on 31 May, this topic provides a timely opportunity to raise awareness about the risks associated with nicotine use among young people.
Nicotine use, particularly through vaping or nicotine pouches, is an increasing concern within school communities, with many children exposed to it well before adolescence through social media, advertising, gaming culture and peer conversations. What is often perceived by students as low-risk experimentation can quickly develop into nicotine dependence, impacting concentration, behaviour and overall wellbeing.
Please share this topic to support staff and families in understanding nicotine addiction and guiding young people towards healthier decisions.
And just a quick reminder that SchoolTV written content, including the KEYPoint flyers, can be translated into 60+ languages and video content is available in Chinese, Hindi and Arabic helping ensure wellbeing information is accessible to all families.

Now available on SchoolTV - Nicotine Addiction
Vaping and nicotine use are becoming increasingly visible in the lives of young people, with many children exposed to it well before adolescence through social media, advertising, gaming culture and peer conversations. What can often begin as curiosity or experimentation may quickly develop into nicotine dependence due to the highly addictive nature of these products.
Many young people are unaware of the impact nicotine can have on brain development, emotional regulation, concentration and overall wellbeing. For families, early and ongoing conversations can play an important role in helping children and teens build critical thinking skills, resist social pressures and make informed choices.
This edition of SchoolTV explores nicotine addiction, the risks associated with vaping and practical ways to support young people through this growing challenge.

Being Kind to Self and Kind to Others in a Digital World
Dear Parents and Carers
As a Christian community, we are called to treat one another with kindness, compassion and respect. In the secondary years, we intentionally encourage students to be kind to others, and also to be kind to themselves—an increasingly important focus as young people navigate academic pressure, friendships and constant digital connection.
Being kind to others means choosing respectful language, showing empathy, and acting with integrity, particularly during moments of disagreement or heightened emotion. Being kind to oneself involves recognising personal worth, understanding that mistakes are part of learning, and resisting negative self‑talk.
For adolescents, social media can significantly increase pressure. Online spaces often amplify comparison and unrealistic expectations around appearance, success and popularity. This can lead young people to be overly critical of themselves and, at times, unkind to others. When students feel the need to always be online or to immediately respond, fatigue, anxiety and tension can increase.
Recently, I challenged the Year 10 girls to come together as a year group and make a commitment to unplug from social media by 9.00pm each night. The intention was to reduce the pressure to remain constantly online and responsive, and to encourage rest, balance and healthier boundaries. I would like to extend this challenge to all of our students.
Parents can support this by reinforcing the message that students do not need to be on social media to stay connected. Encouraging screen‑free time in the evenings helps young people rest, reflect, and engage more meaningfully with family, friends and the world around them.
Here is a link that has some very practical tricks and tips for balancing your time online. Balancing your time online | eSafety Commissioner
When school and home work together to promote kindness, balance and digital wisdom, we help young people grow into resilient, grounded individuals who practise compassion both online and offline.
Kind regards
Mrs Karen Watts

Alumni named Captain of the Australian Emeralds
Caitlyn Eynon, Class of 2020, captain of the Australian Emeralds, will lead the team into the 2026 Women's Baseball World Cup in Rockford, Illinois.
A graduate of the Class of 2020, Caitlyn has built an impressive baseball resumé and has now been named captain of Australia’s Women’s National Baseball Team.
"We are going into this group stage at the World Cup with a winning mentality. We focus only on the aspects that contribute to winning and put no energy into the uncontrollable that don't align with that model," says Eynon. "Having all 20 players bought into that mentality will give us the best chance of success."
We wish Caitlyn and the team the best of luck at the 2026 World Cup. Read more here - Caitlin Eynon named captain of the Emeralds | Baseball.com.au
Year 5 heads to Spain for Tennis!
Year 5 student, Aria Gupta's highest level of achievement this year came during a one-month scholarship at the prestigious Elianers Tennis Academy in Valencia, Spain.
Congratulations to Aria who competed in three Spanish National U12 tournaments under the Australian flag as part of an International Tennis scholarship. Although this opportunity was privately awarded and not through Tennis Australia, Aria earned her place entirely on merit, competing against some of Spain's best Junior players.
She achieved outstanding results, finishing Runner-Up Girls U12 at the XIII Open Nacional Vila de Almussafes and reaching the semi-finals of two additional tournaments.
Congratulations Aria, we look forward to following her Tennis journey!
Community Spirit Shines Through for the Ravens U/12 Basketball Team
The Ravens U/12 basketball team is made up of a wonderful group of friends from both the Halls Head and Meadow Springs campuses. The girls were incredibly grateful for the generous support they received from former Frederick Irwin Anglican School student, Blake Thackrah.
Over the past three seasons, these girls have built strong friendships, developed their skills, and grown together as a team both on and off the court.
This season marked an exciting milestone for the Ravens, with the team securing a sponsor to provide them with their very own playing uniforms. The girls were incredibly grateful for the generous support they received from former Frederick Irwin Anglican School student, Blake Thackrah.
Blake, who enjoyed representing Frederick Irwin in both basketball and cricket during his school years, has always had a passion for sport. His connection to basketball runs even deeper, with his mother having previously played in the State Basketball League (SBL), making the game a special part of their family's story.
Since graduating from Frederick Irwin, Blake has gone on to establish himself as an owner of HTS Constructions. Wanting to give back to the community that helped shape him, Blake generously donated the Ravens' new uniforms, ensuring the team can proudly represent the Ravens this season.
The Ravens would like to sincerely thank Blake for his kindness and generosity. His support is a wonderful example of how past students continue to make a positive impact within the Frederick Irwin community. We are incredibly proud to celebrate Blake's success and appreciate his willingness to invest in the next generation of young athletes.
We wish the Ravens every success for the remainder of the season and thank Blake and HTS Constructions for helping the girls look and feel their best every time they take the court.
