Improvements to Secondary Kiss and Go
Over the term break, we will enhance our Secondary Kiss and Go by improving the location.
Dear Parents and Carers
We will be moving the Secondary Kiss and Go to the area outside the Gymnasium (opposite the current location). New line markings and designated pick-up/drop-off bays will be painted, and a new pedestrian crosswalk will be installed. The new area will be operational from the start of Term 3.
The new student pick-up area is covered, provides ample seating, and will support a smoother flow of traffic. Students should not be picked up or dropped off outside the Administration Building during peak morning and afternoon periods as this causes bottle necks on the road.
We really appreciate your support in not arriving to collect students before 3.10pm and in not parking in the Secondary Kiss and Go to wait. Where possible, please collect your child from 3.25pm onwards, when traffic has eased considerably and movement through the area is more efficient.
Thank you to all parents and carers for your patience during busy times before and after school. By working together, following staff directions, and driving courteously, we can ensure all students arrive and leave the school grounds safely.
Kind regards
Mr Shane Parnell

SchoolTV - FIAS Membership
A reminder to parents and carers that FIAS families have access to free content on School TV.
The next SchoolTV topic is now available –– Nicotine Addiction
With World No Tobacco Day recognised on 31 May, this topic provides a timely opportunity to raise awareness about the risks associated with nicotine use among young people.
Nicotine use, particularly through vaping or nicotine pouches, is an increasing concern within school communities, with many children exposed to it well before adolescence through social media, advertising, gaming culture and peer conversations. What is often perceived by students as low-risk experimentation can quickly develop into nicotine dependence, impacting concentration, behaviour and overall wellbeing.
Please share this topic to support staff and families in understanding nicotine addiction and guiding young people towards healthier decisions.
And just a quick reminder that SchoolTV written content, including the KEYPoint flyers, can be translated into 60+ languages and video content is available in Chinese, Hindi and Arabic helping ensure wellbeing information is accessible to all families.

Now available on SchoolTV - Nicotine Addiction
Vaping and nicotine use are becoming increasingly visible in the lives of young people, with many children exposed to it well before adolescence through social media, advertising, gaming culture and peer conversations. What can often begin as curiosity or experimentation may quickly develop into nicotine dependence due to the highly addictive nature of these products.
Many young people are unaware of the impact nicotine can have on brain development, emotional regulation, concentration and overall wellbeing. For families, early and ongoing conversations can play an important role in helping children and teens build critical thinking skills, resist social pressures and make informed choices.
This edition of SchoolTV explores nicotine addiction, the risks associated with vaping and practical ways to support young people through this growing challenge.

Being Kind to Self and Kind to Others in a Digital World
Dear Parents and Carers
As a Christian community, we are called to treat one another with kindness, compassion and respect. In the secondary years, we intentionally encourage students to be kind to others, and also to be kind to themselves—an increasingly important focus as young people navigate academic pressure, friendships and constant digital connection.
Being kind to others means choosing respectful language, showing empathy, and acting with integrity, particularly during moments of disagreement or heightened emotion. Being kind to oneself involves recognising personal worth, understanding that mistakes are part of learning, and resisting negative self‑talk.
For adolescents, social media can significantly increase pressure. Online spaces often amplify comparison and unrealistic expectations around appearance, success and popularity. This can lead young people to be overly critical of themselves and, at times, unkind to others. When students feel the need to always be online or to immediately respond, fatigue, anxiety and tension can increase.
Recently, I challenged the Year 10 girls to come together as a year group and make a commitment to unplug from social media by 9.00pm each night. The intention was to reduce the pressure to remain constantly online and responsive, and to encourage rest, balance and healthier boundaries. I would like to extend this challenge to all of our students.
Parents can support this by reinforcing the message that students do not need to be on social media to stay connected. Encouraging screen‑free time in the evenings helps young people rest, reflect, and engage more meaningfully with family, friends and the world around them.
Here is a link that has some very practical tricks and tips for balancing your time online. Balancing your time online | eSafety Commissioner
When school and home work together to promote kindness, balance and digital wisdom, we help young people grow into resilient, grounded individuals who practise compassion both online and offline.
Kind regards
Mrs Karen Watts

This was an opportunity for students and their parents to meet with representatives from different universities, TAFE, Apprenticeship centres, the Defence forces, Alcoa and more.

Thank you to Mrs Daphne Bailey, Careers Advisor, for organising this very successful event.
Eagles Cup Carnival
Congratulations to our Year 11, 12 (and some Year 10) students who participated in the Eagles Cup Carnival at North Mandurah JFC.
The first game of the Carnival was against Coastal Lakes which we won by 63 points before having a bye. After the bye the Boys played against Halls Head College, we trialled some different positions for our players to create new structures and game plans and lost by 50 points at the final siren. As there were only three teams in the competition due to a late withdrawal from another school, we advanced through to the grand final against Halls Head, which gave us a second chance at our game plan and structures.
The FIAS Boys started the game off really well, kicking the first three goals of the game to take an early lead. At the conclusion of the first half, we were down by five points and knew our game plan was working as Halls Head was rattled and challenged. The second half was similar to the first half with a goal after goal exchanged between both teams. It hit the final 5-minute mark and Halls Head made a jump and kicked four unanswered goals to win by 25.
All of the FIAS Boys' played exceptionally well and should be proud of their efforts. Due to the team finishing second, we have now progressed to the next stage where we will compete in a semifinal in a few weeks. The school team and location will be sent through at a later date.
I want to thank both Aaron Rekman and Ryan Levitske (parents of our students) who volunteered to help with the Carnival for the day and also all the parents who attended and cheered on the team.
Also, I would like to thank Jett Goard (Sports Trainee) who umpired three games across the day.
ACC and School Sports WA Champion Schools Netball
On Friday 8 May the Senior Girls Netball team attended the ACC Netball Carnival at the Gold Netball Centre.
The team played incredibly well placing third overall for the day. They were competitive, positive and a very mature group of young athletes.
Our Year 7/8 and Year 9/10 netball teams recently competed in the WA School Sport competition at Fremantle Netball Centre, where they played in a round-robin format against schools from across the metropolitan area.
Both teams had a fantastic day of competition. Our Year 7/8 team delivered an outstanding performance, convincingly winning all four of their games to progress through to the next round. The Year 9/10 team faced a challenging draw but showed great resilience, securing two wins from their five matches.
Across both competitions, our girls represented Frederick Irwin with pride, demonstrating excellent sportsmanship, teamwork and determination throughout the day. Congratulations to all players for their enthusiasm and commitment.
A big thank you to Mrs Perkins, Mrs Booker and Miss Hargreaves for coaching, and to Sophie Harford, Georgia Newick and Kona Goard for officiating as umpires.

Southern Western Force Cup Day
Over the course of the Term a group of Year 7-10 boys have been training under the supervision of Angus from RugbyWA and Mr van der Westhuizen in preparation for the Southern Western Force Cup Day held at the Mandurah Pirates RUFC grounds.
Most of the team had minimal rugby exposure but over time improved in knowledge and skill.
This year we looked the part in our new jerseys and over the day we had some great passages of play and tries scored. Our littlest guys were taking on bigger opponents from rugby schools and we had some star sprinters out on the wings.
Our teams were making some big tackles and getting straight back up on their feet to have another go. Even when up against more experienced players we kept running and trying and that was what impressed staff the most.
The boys should be congratulated in the way they conducted themselves throughout the day on and off the field. We look forward to having another hit out in Term 3.
Thank you to @RugbyWA for the assistance with training and for organising the day.
National Sorry Day - 26 May 2026
A day to reflect on the experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and to show respect, understanding and care.
Year 6M2 viewed the speech given to Parliament by then Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and reflected on the significance of the day. Kindy (KM3) read the book 'Somebody’s Land' by Adam Goodes. Both classes then joined and went for a walk to explore the Bush Tucker garden and plant some native trees in our Bush School to mark the occasion. Here are some reflections from the Year 6 students:
“We planted sheok, banksia and grevillea trees. My buddy's name was Felix. We ran down hills, through the trees and down hills again.” Liv
“I had the best start to my day. We went on a little hike with KM3. My walking buddy was Lucas, and I can tell you he was a leader. Lucas showed me the bush tucker garden and helped me plant a banksia, a grevillea, and a sheok tree. I personally had a great time, and I think KM3 did too. Lucas and I sat on a log while we said the Bush Pledge. We also climbed a tree, built a fort and saw a big wasp.” Jack G
“I had the best time with my new best buddy from KM3. Louis is the most energetic, happy, fun, Kindy kid there is! Austin
“My buddy Aggie and I explored the bush and made a pretend campfire from sticks and rocks. We also watched some other students plant some trees, and Aggie said her favourite is the Banksia.” Olivia O
“My friend Franklin and I went on a walk up a hill, then he tripped over and laughed. We planted a sheok tree.” Cruze
“On Tuesday 26 May 2026, I had one of the best days of my life! I had an awesome time with my buddy Alfie running up and down the hill and planting some trees. We said the bush school prayer. My buddy always had a smile on his face. His favourite thing was Limestone Hill and my favourite thing was seeing him having so much fun.” Chase
“I had the best start to the day. We went to bush school with KM3 and looked around the bush tucker garden. I had two buddies and they showed me their secret base (that was not very secret). It was actually surprisingly good. Beau
Year 11 INSTEP Program Work Placement
Year 11 Enterprise Student, Imogen McRae started the year undertaking work placement through INSTEP West as part of her studies. Through the subject selection process and conversations with our Career and VET Advisors she believed that a trade was the best pathway.
Although she missed out on a VETDSS TAFE certificate she decided to pursue work placement. After an interview and Induction with INSTEP West she was placed locally with Ballantyne All Commercial Property Services in their plumbing division. Imogen really enjoyed her placement and was described by her employer as “a tradie in training.” Because of her positive attitude towards her placement she has been offered, and accepted an Apprenticeship with the company. Imogen demonstrated a can do attitude and a willingness to do what was required when asked in all her actions with her School Advisors so it came as no surprise when she was offered the position. She is to be congratulated and we wish her all the best as she commences life as a first year apprentice.
Frederick Irwin Anglican School offers a broad range of courses as part of the Enterprise Pathway which enables a student to pick a pathway that suits their individual needs. Students can undertake General courses, Certificate courses on campus, Offsite certificates through TAFE or other Registered Training Organisations or undertake work placement through INSTEP West.
