Year 7 Teacher Recognised for Excellence

Frederick Irwin Anglican School Year 7 Teacher, Mr Carl Grice, has been selected as one of the 60 state and territory recipients (13 from Western Australia) from a pool of 1450 nominations, in the 2017 ASG National Excellence in Teaching Awards.

For more than 23 years, these awards have provided communities with the opportunity to formally recognise and thank outstanding teachers and leaders.

Carl has been a teacher in Year 7 at Frederick Irwin Anglican School since 2015 and is passionate about encouraging students to reach their potential.

“I teach the whole, not just the academic part of the person, and as the whole flourishes then the academic naturally follows,” he said.

Carl also said that his role is to prepare young people for an unknown future, rather than to just pass examinations.

“Our class works together to improve our mental health and I introduced my students to meditation and mindfulness as strategies to manage stress, and we practice in class regularly,” he said.

Branded as ‘the naughty kid’ in school in the UK, Carl was in his late 20s before he found his vocation in teaching.

“I decided to volunteer at my local primary school, where I immediately connected with helping young people to better themselves, and I strove to be the inspiring teacher that I never had,” he said.

During a year of unpaid leave to look after his mother who had been diagnosed with cancer, Carl was led to other opportunities in roles supporting students who were having difficulty in the learning environment, which led to two visits to International Schools abroad.

After Carl’s mother passed away in 2012, Carl moved to Australia where he quickly fell in love with the Mandurah beach-life, becoming a patrolling member of the Mandurah Surf Life Saving Club and competing in the Masters category of the State Games.

The 12 2017 ASG National Excellence in Teaching Awards will be announced in March 2018. Drawn from across Australia, they will receive a professional development grant and one recipient will also have the opportunity to go to Space Camp in Alabama alongside top teachers from each US state.
