Frederick Irwin Represents at the West Australian Schools Team Racing State Championships 2017
The West Australian Schools Team Racing State Championships was held at the Nedlands Yacht Club during the first week of the April School Holiday.
The event was open to secondary schools from around the state and provided an opportunity for youth sailors to showcase their teams racing skill. Due to low numbers this year we entered a combined Frederick Irwin and Mandurah Catholic College team as the Mandurah Colleges team.
A big challenge this year was the weather; long periods spent onshore due to light winds made concentration a challenge for those not used to the vagaries of sailboat racing. On the first day of qualifying Mandurah performed well, recording 1 loss and 3 wins. On the second day of qualifying one of our sailors was very ill and thankfully Olivia Payne stepped in at late notice. For only the second time in our teams racing history we successfully recorded enough wins to take us into the finals series. While the finals were close, unfortunately, we did not sail as well as in qualifying and just fell short of wins in key races.
Congratulations to Frederick Irwin Anglican School students Michael Compton, Will Drew, Jake Hindmarsh and Olivia Payne for their 8th placing in a very competitive field. The combined team showed determination, gained a lot of experience from the event and the respect of other competing schools. Special thanks to Jessica Eastwell from Mandurah Catholic College for her coaching and guidance before and during the event.
Well done to Shenton and Scotch Colleges who won the event and will now represent WA in the Australian School Teams Championship Regatta to be held at Nedlands Yacht Club during the July holidays.
