Year 5
Year Five at Frederick Irwin involves a range of excursions and hands-on
experiences which enhance two recurring themes throughout the year - Environmental
Awareness and Western Australia's History.
In Term One the classes look at endangered animals with the highlight
being the trip to the Perth Zoo. We also begin growing native trees and
bushes in our school nursery with help from Men of the Trees.
Term Two involves us cleaning some land in Harvey and planting the native
seedlings we have cultivated. The Local Government excursion allows us to
visit the Mandurah Sustainable Home and study its eco-friendly strategies
and behaviours. The students also get the opportunity to compete in the
State Orienteering Championships in June.
A tour of Fremantle's historical sites including the Prison and Maritime
Museum in Term Three provides the Year Fives the chance to appreciate the
life and struggles of our forefathers. In September, guest speakers come
to our classes to discuss the benefits of recycling and reducing our household waste.
All this culminates in our Term Four camp to Rottnest Island where we study its history,
environmental efforts and we get a first hand look at one of Western Australia's endangered
animals - the Quokka.
