Year 11 & Year 12
Frederick Irwin offers 32 subjects and courses at Year 11 and Year 12 level, all of which are accredited with the Curriculum Council. All accredited subjects and courses count towards the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE). Three different categories of subjects and courses are operating in 2008:

New courses
1. outcomes based syllabus
2. students will be enrolled on a Semester basis
3. students will receive a mark out of 100 and/or a grade for each unit
4. Stage 2 and Stage 3 course content will be examined in the WACE examination
Existing Tertiary Entrance Examination subjects (TEE) - No change
1. existing Year 11 syllabus and assessment structures
2. teachers will mark assessment tasks as they currently do.
3. students will receive a mark out of 100 and a grade
4. Year 12 course content will be examined in the WACE examination
Existing Wholly School Assessed subjects (WSA) - No change
1. existing Year 11 and Year 12 Common Assessment Framework subjects
2. students demonstrate achievement of outcomes
3. students receive a grade at the end of the year

Students study six subjects/courses in Year 11. In Year 12, students who take a university entrance programme (i.e. at least four subjects/courses which can count towards a TER) may choose to study five or six subjects/courses in total. All other Year 12 students must study six subjects/courses in total. Generally, students will continue to study the same subjects and courses in Year 12 that they studied in Year 11, but there is an opportunity to change. Although all WACE examinations at the end of Year 12 are based on the Year 12 syllabus only, it is essential for some subjects and courses and desirable for most, that they be studied for two years to maximize success at the Year 12 level.
