Reporting to Parents
Primary
We consider parent-teacher communications vital and have adopted several procedures to achieve this.
- Each student owns a Student Diary which has prime importance and is used for recording homework, reminders and teacher/parent notes. The class teacher endeavours to sight the Diary on a daily basis as it is the link between School and home. Parents should sign this Diary daily as recognition of their awareness of homework set and completed by their child, and as acknowledgement of notes and information contained. As specialist teachers change classes approximately every 40 minutes, a time-saving yellow note may be stapled to the student's Diary in lieu of a handwritten note.
- Group parent/teacher information evenings are held early in Term 1. Each class teacher explains procedures, routines and policies to parents of students in their class.
- Each child in Years 1 to 7 has a Student Portfolio for each Term. These Portfolios provide assessments and samples of the student's learning activities. Portfolios are sent home to parents for perusal at the end of each Term. Summary Reports accompany Student Portfolios at the end of Terms 2 and 4. Pre-Primary students develop one Portfolio for the year.
- During the last four weeks of Term 1 and into the first weeks of Term 2, three-way conferences are held between the student, parents and teacher. All three participants have an important role to play during these conferences. Students demonstrate their knowledge as they share their achievements and set new learning goals. Parents have the opportunity to ask questions about their child's progress and find out how they can support them at home. Teachers discuss the child's learning ability and any strategies necessary to improve outcomes.
- During the year, classes and/or year groups hold assemblies followed by class "open sessions" where parents are able to see their child's work and talk with teachers. Refreshments are served at these sessions which provide a good opportunity for students, parents and teachers to share what is happening in class.
- Parents wishing to discuss any concerns they may have with their child at times other than those previously mentioned are asked to make an appointment with the class teacher or Head of Primary. Student's work is always available in class for parents to view.
The School endeavours to keep parents informed of their child's School life and it may be necessary to request interviews with parents to discuss specific issues which may arise.
