Health & Physical Education Department
Health & Physical Education at Frederick Irwin Anglican
School is an integral component of the holistic development of students.
Health and Physical Education is recognised as a vital learning area
essential in the overall success of students.
The Health and Physical Education Department at Frederick Irwin identifies
as it's primary objective;
"The development of a supportive, friendly environment that
allows for effective teaching and successful learning."
The achievement of this key objective is the shared responsibility of students,
teachers, school and community.
Essential in achieving this objective is;
- a genuine interest in the personal development, achievements and successes of young people.
- the establishment of clear behavioural expectations and a mutual respect between students and teacher.
- the opportunity for all students to develop their individual potential, experience some success, improve physical skills and promote self esteem.
As a result of their learning in Health and Physical Education, students develop an understanding of health issues and the skills and attitudes needed for healthy, active lifestyles. They are able to make responsible decisions about health and physical activity and promote their own and others' health and well-being, now and in the future.
Physical activity is significant in the lives of many student's at Frederick Irwin. It makes an extensive contribution to the culture and traditions of the school. It is a source of enjoyment and personal challenge for students and a focus in an effort to lead healthy lives. It brings together students from within the school, different schools and neighbouring communities. Students participate in physical activity for its intrinsic and extrinsic value and because it compliments the need to have balance in their own and others' lives, assisting in them realising their potential into the future.
Outdoor Education
Through interaction with the natural world, Outdoor Education
aims to develop an understanding of our relationships with the environment, others
and ourselves. The ultimate goal of Outdoor Education is to contribute towards a sustainable world.
Outdoor Education at Frederick Irwin provides for a progression of outdoor
experiences from Years 3 to 12. In Year 3, for example, this may be a one
night experience within the school grounds, to in Year 12, a five day self
sufficient bush walking expedition at a remote location determined by the participants.
Outdoor Education provides for experiences involving challenge through
adventure and in that regard, through camps and expeditions. Increasingly
quality outdoor education experiences have been replaced with short term one
off adventure experiences that involve little if any prior preparation and/or
debriefing for the students involved. This type of Outdoor Education falls well
short in regards to the potential outcomes that can be achievable from quality
Outdoor Education experiences.
The Outdoor Education programme at Frederick Irwin includes the development
of basic camp craft and practical expedition skills, expedition first aid and
environmental education. Each programme culminates with an extended camping or
expedition experience where students must accept increasing levels of personal
responsibility for their own and others physical comfort and the protection and
conservation of the natural world.
Outdoor Education at Frederick Irwin is undergoing constant review to ensure we
move closer to realising its established outcomes. We believe there is no greater
teacher than experience and no more powerful potential experience than that provided
by quality Outdoor Education.
