Languages other than English
All students in Years 6 to 8 study Japanese as a second language. In Years 6 & 7 LOTE is studied for one period a week and in Year 8 for three periods a week. From Year 9 to Year 12, language study is optional. Students may choose to continue their language study and experience language classes increasingly from three to six periods a week.
A native speaking Language Assistant interacts with students to improve their confidence and skills. Staff encourage students to take risks in language learning and be comfortable in their learning environment. Students are also provided with the opportunity to access a wide range of authentic resources from the country being studied.
Years 10, 11 and 12 students have the opportunity to travel to Japan, live with a Japanese family and attend a Japanese School for two weeks. This trip is not compulsory and a student can still succeed in their studies without going to Japan.
Japanese Week
One week of a Term is devoted to cultural activities and learning with a focus
on Year 8 involvement. Students are involved in activities such as sushi
making and origami.
