English Department
In English, students learn how to become competent, reflective, adaptable and critical users of language. Programmes are designed to promote the attributes as outlined in the Curriculum Framework document for Western Australian Schools (1998) :
- To encourage in all students an enjoyment of English, pursuit of knowledge and achievement of potential;
- self acceptance and respect of self, concern for others and their rights,
social and civic responsibility and environmental responsibility;
- work collaboratively and individually´
- develop powers of reasoning;
- develop skills in problem solving.
The four English outcomes of Speaking & Listening, Reading, Writing and
Viewing are explored through units of work and involve students in the presentation of
information, ideas and entertainment in the mass media, new information technologies
and literature. Students learn that the use of English is inextricably involved with
values, beliefs and ways of thinking about themselves and their world. They develop
an appreciation of, and sensitivity to, socio-cultural diversity in the use of English
and the ability to reflect on and critically analyse their own language and the language of others.
Extension and enrichment is afforded through the Australian Oracy Competition, Writer
in Resident Workshops, attendance at Literature Festivals, elective creative writing
and Children´s Literature Workshops.
